What kinds of tourism experiences do the DMOs most advanced in the world offer?

Balzac works with data on a daily basis: target audiences, tone of voice, competitive positioning, social media metrics and traffic analysis. In this case, the brief was different: a comprehensive and systematic comparative analysis of personal travel across the leading international DMOs, with a specific focus on affordable luxury travel.

We have selected seven destinations that differ in terms of their characteristics, scale and governance model: from the Scandinavian institutional model to the ultra-specialised DMC in the Faroe Islands, from the German MICE metropolis to the Spanish wellness city. The result is a map of how high-quality tourism is developed, promoted and marketed today.

The patterns that emerged from the analysis

Sustainability is no longer just an added value
In fact, it is the expected standard. From the Faroe Islands to Valencia and Barcelona, all the destinations that are the form a strategic axis that can be measured, not a stated intention.

‘Localhood’ trumps aspirational tourism
Copenhagen and Berlin are investing in initiatives that bring residents and visitors closer together. Authenticity isn’t something you simply claim; it’s built through dedicated infrastructure.

Affordable Luxury is marketed through scarcity or inclusivity
The Faroe Islands use scarcity as a selling point (limited places, competitive selection). Cannes uses certification and controlled access. Valencia uses digital technology and personalisation.

Digital is not optional
Valencia: 58 per cent of bookings are made online, and 43 per cent of operators use AI. The technological gap between advanced and traditional destinations is widening rapidly.

Integrated branding or nothing
Each destination analysed has a single body that coordinates the DMO, events and local DMCs. Fragmented communication is the most common problem in destinations that are struggling to grow.

The result
A comprehensive and in-depth study, summarised in a concise strategic report: a clear approach, verified data, actionable recommendations. Not a catalogue of best practices, but a roadmap to navigate a rapidly changing market.

In high-quality tourism, success goes to those who know how to create authenticity even before they communicate it.
