Based in Germany, offices all over the world, a website made in Italy – oh yeah!

Nano plus Fab plus Net: ‘nano’ stands for nanotechnology, ‘fab’ does not stand for ‘fabulous’ but for ‘fabrication’, and ‘net’ stands for the internet. A network comprising dozens and dozens of stakeholders, committees, associations, initiatives and projects spread across the globe, from Europe to the Americas, which use the platform’s website to exchange knowledge, expertise and experience on the topic of the sustainable, ethical and safe production of nanotechnology.

The scale of nanotechnology is based (well, what a surprise) on the nanometre, which is one billionth of a metre. In fact, if you were to line up three million nanometres one after the other, they would fit into the first letter of this sentence – as seen from the computer on which we are finishing this sentence. Or rather, as we imagine them.

From sergeants to admirals: the four access levels for the platform

Having given NanoFabNet an identity that is as robust as it is simple, by reorganising typography and spacing, colours and visual style, Balzac went on to build the platform with four levels of access to information and the database.

These are primarily basic users, who can access freemium content, such as viewing available job vacancies, events and opportunities to secure funding for their projects, as well as accessing the document database and the general directory. Hub members, who are subject to a streamlined registration process, have a higher status – akin to a captain rather than a sergeant: they can post job vacancies, events and funding opportunities, and download in-depth reports. For the core team – effectively ship captains – nothing is off-limits, including the publication of news and unlimited access to the database, whilst the highest rank – true hundred-star commanders – is held by the platform’s team of administrators.

All conceived, produced, tested and published by Balzac for NanoFabNet, an initiative supported by the European Union under the ‘Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme’.
